Flynn set for homecoming
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:12 AM
The rigid triangle system doesn't seem to fit his style and the losses pour down like an
avalanche. A rough estimate by Jonny Flynn concludes he's already suffered more losses as a
pro than at Niagara Falls High and Syracuse University combined.
That's why Flynn is looking forward to his "homecoming" tonight when his Minnesota
Timberwolves face the Toronto Raptors in the Air Canada Center in Toronto for the first time
this season.
"I can't wait," Flynn said. "I know there are going to be a lot of people from home there
so I can get some of that home-style love. I had to get a lot of tickets and I've been asking
everyone on the team for their tickets."
Through his first 20 games in the NBA, Flynn is third on the team in points (13.9) and the
leader in assists (3.5), numbers that rank him among the best of a deep rookie crop in the
NBA. But it's the triangle offense that he doesn't particularly care for.
"It's a system that has shown success with the right players in it," Flynn said. "Michael
Jordan and the Bulls won championships with it and the Lakers won championships with it but as
far as my game, it's not the right system. It doesn't fit the way I play."
Indeed, in high school and college, Flynn dominated the basketball and ran the pick and
roll with confidence. But he said in the long run, running the triangle will make him a better
player.
"It's almost like a slow down system, like a halfcourt system where I don't have the ball
in my hands a lot," Flynn said. "That's definitely different for me."
Surprisingly, Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis said last month that Flynn was the one who was
playing too slow.
"He's walking the ball up the floor too much for my liking," Rambis told the St. Paul
Pioneer Press. "We need him to push the ball more. He's allowing defenses too much time to
settle in against us."
Flynn started his career with a win over New Jersey then the Timberwolves lost 15
consecutive games before winning Nov. 29 at Denver.
"That was terrible," Flynn said. "I don't think I lost that many games ever. You go through
stretches where it's like a dark cloud over you and a funk we couldn't get out of."
"I knew it was going to be a new coaching staff and 70 percent of the team gone from last
year — a whole new team basically," Flynn said. "When you're going through a process, it
doesn't happen overnight. But I knew it was going to be a tough year and a long year of
losing. You never want to think like that but at least you can prepare for it."
