Bills notebook: Tolbert reportedly a candidate at LSU
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:12 AM
LSU coach Les Miles is reportedly pursuing Buffalo Bills wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert
for a similar job on the Tigers staff according to FootballCoachScoop.com.
The Web site reported that the two parties met Sunday. Tolbert was not available for
comment Monday.
According to The Baton Rouge Advocate, current LSU receivers coach D.J. McCarthy is at the
center of possible NCAA rules violations the Tigers are investigating. The probe also involves
an unnamed player on LSU's team that didn't play this season. LSU already has one opening on
its staff with assistant head coach/running backs coach Larry Porter taking the job at
Memphis.
The majority of Tolbert's coaching career has been spent in the South. A native of Conroe,
Texas, Tolbert played wide receiver at LSU before coaching stints at Louisiana-Monroe, Auburn,
Louisiana-Lafayette and Florida. He was the receivers coach with the Arizona Cardinals in 2003
before joining the Bills' staff the following season.

Cornerback Terrence McGee said he is improving but still lists his status as day-to-day for
Sunday's game at Kansas City. Arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee
forced him to miss three games but he played sparingly in last Thursday's game against the
Jets. He didn't start as Reggie Corner began the game.
"I'm getting closer, but it's still a day-to-day type of thing," McGee said. "Whether I
start or whether I do what I did last week is still up in the air but I feel like I'm getting
better."
McGee said he will likely play with some pain for the remainder of the season.
"It's one of those things that's going to take a while to fully go away," he said.

Heading into Sunday's game, the Bills rank last in rush defense with an average of 171.1
yards per game. They have allowed 2,065 yards on the ground and opponents are averaging nearly
5 yards a carry (4.9) which is something that frustrates defensive tackle Kyle Williams.
"It's the same thing," he said. "A lot of it is misdirection on the counter plays, the
cutback runs and a lot of the time we're over-pursuing. It's got to get corrected. When
someone misses their gap and overruns it and doesn't make a play it exposes us."
Williams said opponents are game-planning more counter and cut-back runs because the Bills
are having difficulty stopping them.
"It's hard to defend when you have guys pressing," he said. "Guys are just trying to get
guys on the ground they're pressing to make a play because they are fed up with it and trying
to do too much and that's when you get caught and get crazy."
. . .
The Bills are 4-8, in last place in the AFC East and the playoffs are out of the question.
But with four games remaining, wide receiver Lee Evans said the team has to play for each
other.
"We're trying to get some momentum and end this season on a good note," he said. "I think
that's how you have to approach it and stay professional and work everyday."
Like Williams, it's frustrating for Evans that the Bills keep losing the same way week in
and week out. Offensively, the Bills are converting only 26 percent on third down. Only the
Chiefs are worst (24 percent).
"Like I said a number of times before, we haven't played up to the potential that we have
offensively," Evans said. "A lot of things have contributed to that but we know we haven't
played as well as we can."
. . .
The Bills added tight end Joe Klopfenstein to the 53-man roster on Monday. Terms were not
disclosed.
Klopfenstein rejoins the Bills after being released Nov. 28. Klopfenstein appeared in all
16 games, making 10 starts in 2008 with St. Louis. In his three-year career, he has played in
48 games making 37 starts and caught 33 passes for 386 yards and two touchdowns.
The 6-foot-5, 262-pound Colorado product originally entered the NFL as a second-round (46th
overall) draft choice of the Rams in 2006. To make room for Klopfenstein, the Bills released
defensive tackle Corey Mace.
