Bills lose their footing against physical Jets
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:11 AM
TORONTO — The New York Jets imposed their physical will on the Buffalo Bills on Thursday
night.
The Jets relied on a punishing running game on offense and a withering blitzing scheme on
defense to score a 19-13 victory over the Bills.
The game was won in the trenches.
New York rushed for 249 yards and held the ball for 35:10 in pushing the Bills' defense
around the field.
A crowd of 51,567 at the Rogers Centre saw the Bills stay in the game largely because the
Bills' defense held the Jets' passing game in check.
But the Bills' offense was smothered, producing just 71 net passing yards and 10 first
downs.
"They had a really good scheme," Bills coach Perry Fewell said of the Jets' ground game.
"They did some things a little bit differently than they did the first time, and we didn't
tackle well in the first half. I thought we tackled poorly."
"They definitely had some good plays there where they got a lot of cutback yards," said
Bills middle linebacker Paul Posluszny. "We're a fast-flow defense. We try to get downhill as
fast as we can. Sometimes the ball does come back. We have to be disciplined."
The Jets entered the game ranked No. 2 in the NFL in rushing. The Bills rank 32nd in the
league in run defense. The Jets pounded the Bills for 318 rushing yards in the first meeting
between the teams, on Oct. 18 in Giants Stadium.
So the two-game gory details for the Bills' run defense against the Jets: 567 yards allowed
and a 6.8-yard per-carry average.
Jets running back Thomas Jones rushed for 109 yards. No. 2 back Shonn Greene added 59. The
Jets won despite the fact backup quarterback Kellen Clemens played the last 22 minutes.
Starter Mark Sanchez went out with a knee injury.
Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick hit just 9 of 23 passes for 98 yards. The Bills
converted just 1 of 11 third-down situations.
The Bills' lone touchdown came on a 15-yard run by Marshawn Lynch in the first half.
Buffalo pulled within six points on a field goal by Rian Lindell with 5:28 left.
But a last-ditch drive that started at the Buffalo 23 with 2:32 remaining lasted only two
plays. Fitzpatrick was sacked for a 10-yard loss on the first one. He threw an interception to
Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis on the second.
Fitzpatrick simply did not have time to hit his receivers downfield. The Jets' blitzes
overwhelmed the Bills' patchwork offensive line. Fitzpatrick was sacked three times and was
forced to scramble five other times.
Terrell Owens was held in check by Revis. Owens caught three passes for 31 yards. Lee Evans
managed just one catch for 38 yards.
"We had a lot of opportunities out there, a lot of missed opportunities," Evans said. "We
just couldn't get it there for a number of different reasons.
"What they were doing was pressing me and then rolling a safety over," Evans said. "So it
didn't look like two [double coverage] but the safety was cheating to my side. Then they just
manned up Terrell with Revis."

The loss dropped the Bills to 4-8. New York improved to 6-6.
The first half was far more entertaining than the entire game between the Bills and Dolphins
in Toronto last year, as the two teams combined for 26 points, seven more than the scoring
output of the 2008 game.
The Bills opened the scoring on a 49-yard Lindell field goal.
The Jets were threatening to take the lead midway through the quarter, but Bills defensive
tackle Kyle Williams made a big play to halt their march.
Williams beat perennial Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca and sacked Sanchez for a 10-yard loss
back to the Bills' 20 on a third-and-10 play. The sack forced a 38-yard field goal by Jay
Feely that tied the score, 3-3, with 3:39 left in the first quarter.
Lynch, relieving starting running back Fred Jackson, was the star of the second quarter for
the Bills. On a second-and-6 play from midfield, Lynch took a toss to the left, burst through
a big hole and rambled 35 yards to the Jets' 15.
The Bills ran Lynch off left tackle on the next play, too, and he powered 15 yards
downfield for a touchdown, dragging a Jets defender the final 4 yards into the end zone. The
Bills were ahead, 10-6, with 10:25 to go.
New York took the lead for good late in the second quarter. The Jets zipped 86 yards
downfield in just six plays and 2:58. The drive ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass from
Sanchez to receiver Braylon Edwards.
The yards came in big chunks. The Jets got a 17-yard run by the rookie Greene on the first
play of the drive. Sanchez beat a Bills blitz and hit Jerricho Cotchery for a 44-yard gain to
the Buffalo 19.
The Jets outgained the Bills, 218-158, in the first 30 minutes.
New York rushed for 129 yards, with Jones leading the way with 58 yards.
"We've got a tremendous offensive line," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "Buffalo does a good job
rushing the passer. They're probably built to rush the passer better than they are to stop the
run."
