Bills replay: Run defense stiffens
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:07 AM
For two quarters Sunday, it looked like the same old Bills defense as another running back
in Miami's Ricky Williams trampled his way to 79 yards in the first half. The Bills stiffened
considerably in the second half. Although Williams became the eighth runner to top 100 yards,
he was limited to 36 more yards.
SS George Wilson was effective blitzing off the edge and tripping up Williams on a few
occasions. On one third quarter play, DT Spencer Johnson got penetration that forced Williams
to hesitate. Wilson shot through to make the tackle for no gain.
On another run in the quarter, the Bills' defensive front held its ground and Wlliams had
nowhere to run and was gang tackled by DTs Marcus Stroud and Kyle Williams and DE Aaron
Schobel for no gain. In the fourth quarter, a blitz by LB Chris Draft drew a blocker away from
DE Chris Kelsay, who was free to drop Williams for a 1-yard gain.
The Bills will need more of the same Thursday against Jets RB Thomas Jones, who ran for 210
yards in the previous meeting.
