Bills-Jaguars report card
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:05 AM
The News' football writers assign grades for different aspects of the game.
Grading the Bills
Running game
Offensive line is a mess, but Lynch has to be better. Averaged 2.3 on eight carries with
long of 5 yards. Time to make Jackson the featured back. Grade: F.
Passing game
Fitzpatrick justified switch from Edwards with 297-yard performance, best by a Bills QB in
three years. O-line didn't hold up at the end, though. Grade: B.
Run defense
Terrific effort by front seven despite absence of Stroud. Williams, Johnson and Posluszny
were huge. Jones-Drew averaged 2.6 on 25 carries, long of 10. Grade: A.
Pass defense
Pretty good overall, but played too soft on Jaguars' game-winning drive. Got consistent
rush, but had only had two sacks. Grade: B-.
Special teams
Moorman had solid day again. Parrish got another chance at punt returns and made another
foolish decision that pinned Bills at own 2-yard line. Grade: C.
Coaching
Team played with passion and purpose in Fewell's debut. Solid defensive game plan shut down
dangerous Jones-Drew. Too conservative at end of first half. Grade: B+.
Grading the Jaguars
Running game
Committed to run, but never really got it going. Jones-Drew had worst game in a month and
didn't have a carry over 10 yards. Grade: D.
Passing game
Garrard was 13 for 16 for 147 yards in second half. Hit five consecutive throws on winning
drive, including decisive 3-yarder to Sims-Walker. Grade: B+.
Run defense
Limited Bills to 18 yards in second half. Stuffed Lynch repeatedly. Got ball back on quick
three-and-out series to set up winning drive. Grade: A.
Pass defense
Missed Rashean Mathis, the three-time Pro Bowl corner. Allowed Owens too much room to
operate, didn't get consistent pressure on Fitzpatrick. Grade: C.
Special teams
Podlesh, the pride of Rochester, had decent punting day. Dropped three kicks inside the 20.
Coverage on punts was solid, giving Bills 0 return yards. Grade: B-.
Coaching
Stuck with run even when it wasn't working. Play calling was solid on the winning drive.
Didn't panic when Bills took lead on 98-yard pass. Grade: B.
