Bills' receivers give Fitzpatrick a thumbs up
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:04 AM
Ryan Fitzpatrick is excited about getting another shot to start at quarterback for the
Buffalo Bills.
His receivers seem genuinely excited about him taking over again.
And Trent Edwards' chances to ever become "The Man" in Buffalo appear all but over.
Interim head coach Perry Fewell on Wednesday announced his decision to start Fitzpatrick
when the Bills face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
"I'm certainly just looking forward to Jacksonville right now, but this is my opportunity to
step in and try to get the team some wins," Fitzpatrick said. "If you look, we've struggled on
offense all year long, but the situation isn't one where we don't have the talent, because we
do."
Edwards gives way to Fitzpatrick in the wake of Sunday's 41-17 loss at Tennessee. It was
Edwards' first start after a three-game break due to a concussion suffered early in the game
against the New York Jets. Fitzpatrick directed the Bills to victory that day and the next
week at Carolina. He lost the next start against Houston, just before the Bills' bye week.
Fitzpatrick has completed just 49.4 percent of his passes. He has two TD strikes, four
interceptions and a passer rating of 49.8.
Edwards has a completion percentage of 60.2 percent with six TDs and seven interceptions.
His passer rating is 74.1.
Nevertheless, Fitzpatrick won two games and has shown a bit more willingness to throw
downfield. That seems to make his receivers happy.
Terrell Owens said he thought Fitzpatrick should have remained the starter after the bye.
"I think Ryan, No. 1, is a veteran," Owens said. "He has a lot more experience. There are
some situations where he'll be able to buy time with that experience. There will be some times
where he can assess the defense and really take some shots down the field. We're looking
forward to the opportunity with Ryan. Obviously he was 2-1 before the bye week when he was in
there. Personally I felt like it was his job to lose. But again, there are things that are out
of our control."
Lee Evans seconded the emotion.
"I think some of the things that Fitz does are really good," Evans said. "When he played
before, he stepped up and made some big plays. So I think it'll help. We have a lot of
confidence in him. I'm excited to see him play."
The fact the Bills would turn away from Edwards after just one start in the wake of his
concussion is a clear vote of no confidence for the third-year quarterback.
Edwards did not make himself available to media in the locker room after Wednesday's
practice.
For his career, Edwards is 14-16 as a starting quarterback. He has 24 touchdowns, 25
interceptions and a passer rating of 78.0. He has no 300-yard passing games and has thrown for
250-plus yards in just five of 30 starts.
Of course, there are a myriad of factors for the Bills' low-functioning attack. But the
Bills have decided Edwards needed to make more plays to keep his job.
Edwards will be in the final year of his contract next season. So it would take a
miraculous comeback for him to once again be viewed as the team's long-term answer at
quarterback.
The 26-year-old Fitzpatrick is eager to prove he's at least a good short-term answer.
"We're just fighting to find any sort of consistency right now, and there were some things
in that last game that we can build upon," he said. "I think there's optimism, there's
excitement in the locker room right now, especially offensively just in terms of trying to get
this thing turned around, and we're going to work our hardest to do that."
