Bills notebook: Fewell adds fire to practice
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:04 AM
Perry Fewell set a hard-working tone Wednesday in his first practice as interim head coach
with the Buffalo Bills.
The Bills practiced in full pads and will do so again today. That's a departure from fired
coach Dick Jauron's tactics. The Bills did not practice in full pads twice in a week during
the regular season.
"I just felt like Jacksonville's a very physical football team," Fewell said of the Bills'
opponent on Sunday. "And I felt like going into this week that we needed to have a mind-set of
being physical, and so I wanted to put the pads on to send a message that we're going to be
physical."
Fewell also wanted to use the padded practice to try to improve the Bills' running game.
"We need to work on our run game and the pads was a way to do that," Fewell said.
The Bills were impressed by the tone Fewell set.
"He's in control," safety George Wilson said. "He made that impression just in the first few
moments that he addressed the team this morning. He was very stern. You could see it in his
eyes."
"He brought some energy we haven't seen before," receiver Lee Evans said. "He brought that to
the team meeting room and told us to practice with some energy and play with a purpose."
The Bills' players were sad to see Jauron get fired. Players said Fewell's morning address to
the full squad helped get them focused.
"The guys definitely weren't as gung-ho coming in today, because the change was made
yesterday and guys I don't think really knew what to expect when they walked in the door,"
Wilson said. "I think after the team meeting we had ... when Perry got his first opportunity
to address the team, he kind of cleared everything up. He set the tone, he laid out the
expectations. He made it clearly known what he expected to see from the guys."
. . .
Fewell joked about his distaste for the false-start penalties that have plagued the offense.
"We worked on that today. I started to cut the guy's finger off when he jumped offsides," he
said, laughing, "but [trainer] Bud [Carpenter] told me I shouldn't do that. So I kind of got
up in their face a little bit and just made my presence felt and just told them, "Hey men, now
it's first-and-15. We've got 5 more yards to go.' ... It's not acceptable. We've got to focus
and we have to concentrate."
. . .
Fewell said he was "very optimistic" about the knee injury suffered by left tackle Demetrius
Bell against Tennessee. Fewell said it is a "week-to-week" injury.
Rookie Andy Levitre will shift from left guard to left tackle against Jacksonville, and
veteran Seth McKinney will play guard.
Not practicing were cornerbacks Terrence McGee (knee) and Ashton Youboty (ankle),
linebacker Keith Ellison (quadriceps), defensive tackle Kyle Williams (knee), safety Jairus
Byrd (groin), defensive tackle Marcus Stroud (knee), and receivers Roscoe Parrish and Justin
Jenkins, both of whom were ill.
Fewell said he thinks Stroud will be ready to play. Byrd probably will be OK.
. . .
The Bills placed tight end Derek Fine on the injured reserve list and signed three-year
veteran Joe Klopfenstein to take his place. Fine suffered a knee injury late in the Tennessee
game. Klopfenstein is a 6-foot-5, 262-pounder who played the previous three years with St.
Louis.
Buffalo also signed offensive lineman Christian Gaddis to the practice squad and placed WR
C.J. Hawthorne on the practice squad injured list.
