Bills sign tight end Martin, guard Urbik
Roosevelt is one of four placed on practice squad

It was suspected after the Buffalo Bills made their final cuts Saturday that more roster moves could be made before the season opener.
That proved true Sunday, when the team signed free agent tight end David Martin and claimed guard Kraig Urbik off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Bills also began assembling their practice squad, signing four players, including Buffalo native Naaman Roosevelt.
To make room for Martin and Urbik, tight end J.P. Foschi and defensive back Dominique Harris were released.
Martin, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound Tennessee product, is an eight-year NFL veteran. He was placed on injured reserve shortly before the 2009 season by the Dolphins after knee surgery, then was released by the team in December with an injury settlement. He re-signed with Miami on Aug. 6, but had his contract terminated Saturday during final cuts.
Martin spent the first six years of his career with Green Bay and has recorded 152 catches for 1,519 yards and 14 touchdowns in 101 career games, including 43 starts.
Martin replaces Foschi on the roster after the latter did little to distinguish himself after signing with the Bills on Aug. 23.
Foschi dropped the first pass thrown his way in training camp and had a forgettable performance against Detroit in the preseason finale. His release means the Bills still have just two healthy tight ends, with Martin joining Jonathan Stupar.
Urbik's acquisition was also meant to bolster a position with limited depth. Urbik was with the Steelers in 2009, but was inactive for every game. He's a huge man at 6-foot-5 and 323 pounds. The third-round pick of the Steelers in 2009 had a ton of experience in college, starting 50 games for Wisconsin and earning All-Big Ten Conference honors in 2007 and 2008.
It was a mild surprise that Harris, who was one of five undrafted free agents to make the Bills' initial 53-man roster, survived Saturday's cut, if only because of the position he plays. Harris was the sixth safety on the roster -- it's rare for an NFL team to keep more than five -- and was not expected to see much playing time at a deep position.
Before being awarded to the Bills, four other teams reportedly put in a waiver claim for Urbik -- the Broncos, Dolphins, Jets and Bengals. The Bills now have eight offensive linemen on the active roster.
Joining Roosevelt on the practice squad are fullback Rodney Ferguson, running back Joique Bell and offensive tackle Jason Watkins.
"It definitely felt good to hear from them," Roosevelt said. "My agent said teams were calling, but my first choice was always to stay with the Bills."
With undrafted free agents David Nelson and Donald Jones making the team at receiver, Roosevelt felt good about his chances in Buffalo. He said his primary focus will be gaining more strength.
"I just have to keep working hard," he said.
The Bills still have four available spots on their practice squad. To be eligible, players must first be waived and go unclaimed by another team, so if he clears, Harris would be eligible.
The Bills were given the day off Sunday. They return to practice today in preparation for the season opener against Miami.
