Sullivan: Fitzpatrick isn't the answer at quarterback

Left-over ruminations from Sunday's wild win:

Dick Jauron had nothing new to report on Trent Edwards, which isn't surprising.

Jauron will wait as long as he can to keep Carolina guessing about his starting quarterback.

My guess is that Edwards will sit a week, allowing his head to clear after suffering his

second concussion in a little over a year.

Many fans want to see more of Ryan Fitzpatrick. I can't blame them. The backup QB is always

the most popular guy in town, especially when the starter performed as miserably as Edwards

did during the three-game losing streak.

Fitzpatrick made a big throw to Lee Evans, hitting him in stride for a rare run-after-catch

TD. His stats (10 of 25, 116 yards) were mediocre, but he did OK for a guy who came off the

bench cold. It would be interesting to see how he does with a full week of preparation as the

No. 1.

But let's not get carried away. Fitzpatrick is an average quarterback, a backup. He's not

leading anyone to the promised land. He reminds me of Kelly Holcomb, a serviceable but limited

backup who briefly roused the masses simply because he was an alternative to the other guy (in

that case, J.P. Losman).

The long-term QB doesn't appear to be on the roster. Edwards has regressed terribly in the

past year. But the Bills need to find out once and for all before moving forward. I'll admit,

Edwards has done little to justify keeping the position long-term. But if healthy, it's still

his job to lose for the rest of the year.

It looks as if Roscoe Parrish's days in Buffalo could be numbered. Parrish was

inactive Sunday and Fred Jackson took over the punt and kickoff return duties. It's a smart

move regardless. Jackson has lost touches in the offense since Marshawn Lynch came back and

returning kicks is another way to get the ball in his hands.

Jackson is an upgrade over Parrish. His 27-yard punt return helped the Bills get in

position for a potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation. He had a 78-yard

kickoff return called back by penalty to start the second half.

They need to keep Jackson involved in the passing offense. Jackson, who led the team with

20 catches coming into the game, didn't catch a pass. He had 15 catches in the first three

weeks, but just five since Lynch's return.

The Bills didn't exactly light up the scoreboard. But huddling for the first time

(and having Alex Van Pelt on the sideline) made a difference. They won the time of possession

(39:03-33:13), and the offense didn't commit a penalty after the middle of the second quarter.

The line had just one false start — on the opening possession.

The Bills were more poised than the Jets in key moments. They didn't have an accepted

penalty after the third quarter. The Jets had six penalties in OT, including false starts on

the first play of their second and third possessions.

Aaron Maybin, the rookie defensive end, was a virtual non-factor again. Maybin

played little and did not record a tackle. His only tangible effect on the proceedings was an

offsides call on a third-and-10 play late in the third quarter.

Despite the crisis at linebacker last week, the Bills said they had no intentions of

playing Maybin at the position. "The coaches aren't telling me anything," Maybin said, "so I'm

not asking too many questions. I'm just trying to make sure I'm prepared when they need me."

The special teams are still having their troubles. They gave the Jets a field goal

by having 12 men on the field on a punt. Josh Reed ran into another punt to give the ball

away. But at least punter Brian Moorman had a decent day. Coming into the game, Moorman was

tied for 30th in the NFL in dropping punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line. He did it four

times on Sunday.
