Question Mark: Packers are the NFL's youngest team
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:52 AM
Q: What is the youngest team in the NFL, and where do the Bills rank? — Ethan
Scott, New York
A: Green Bay has the youngest roster with an average age of 25.70. Indianapolis and
Kansas City are tied for second at 25.89. That's based on the opening-day rosters. The news
item here is the Colts. They're on a streak of six straight seasons with at least 12 wins, and
they probably will make it seven this year, since they're 5-0.
They have made the playoffs nine of the last 10 years. Obviously this is a testament to the
management of Bill Polian and the quarterbacking of Peyton Manning, among other things.
The Bills are 10th in average age at 26.40.
The oldest roster in the league is in Washington, at 27.6, with 17 players age 30 and over.
Q: Every guy on the team knows that no matter how much they stink they won't get
benched. Dick Jauron should have sat the entire line for a series or two just to send a
message that undisciplined and lax play won't be tolerated. What do you think? — T.A.,
Tonawanda
A: I agree that Jauron needs to make players feel more uncomfortable in some way,
shape or form. As Marv Levy used to say, football is not a game of comfortable. In terms of
doing it by way of benching people, his options are a bit limited. Benching the whole line was
not an option because they only had one healthy O-line reserve (Seth McKinney), and he's a
guard. But he could have thrown him out there for two running plays, just to try to send a
message that false starts are unacceptable. The Bills have vaulted rookie Jamon Meredith ahead
of veteran Kirk Chambers at right tackle this week.
Q: What is the NFL policy on which and how many games are broadcast into different
areas? It seems that when the Bills are home we only get one game on FOX and one game on CBS.
Why wouldn't the NFL want more games broadcast into more areas so they could maximize profits?
— Tony Donofrio, Buffalo
A: The NFL's TV rules mandate that that no game is shown on TV opposite the game for
the local team. The rule is in place to grow and maintain local support, regardless of whether
the game is sold out or not. On a week when the Bills are on the road (Sunday, Monday,
Thursday or Saturday), Buffalo gets three Sunday afternoon games. Two are on the network (CBS
or FOX) designated by the league to get the doubleheader, one is by the other network.
When the Bills are home on Sunday, the Buffalo market gets two games (one on FOX, one on
CBS), unless the network televising the Bills game is also the double-header network and the
Bills game is sold out. In that case, Buffalo gets the Bills game and two games in the other
time slot (1 p.m. or 4 p.m.).
Q: Do you think the Bills might try to bring J.P. Losman back once the UFL league
finishes up in November?
J.P. was the man when they let him unleash the ball. Would J.P. even want to come back
after the way they treated him? — Derek Sawyer
A: I don't think Losman would come back to play for the Bills, and I don't think the
Bills would pursue him, regardless of the circumstances.
