Bills-Jets scouting report
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:53 AM
The News' Allen Wilson breaks down key matchups for the game:
Young gun
Rookie QB Mark Sanchez was flying high in leading the Jets to a 3-0 record, but he's come
down to earth after two straight losses. The Bills will look at film of Sanchez against New
Orleans, which baited him into making bad passes and intercepted him three times. Sanchez can
make all the throws, though, and the addition of WR Braylon Edwards gives the Jets an elite
downfield threat. The Bills' secondary gets S Donte Whitner (thumb) back, which should help in
coverage. But it will be up to DE Aaron Schobel and the Bills' pass rush to pressure Sanchez
into mistakes.
Under siege
Unlike Sanchez, Bills QB Trent Edwards seems to be having confidence issues. He has been
indecisive and continues to throw short, check-down throws instead of trying to get the ball
downfield to WRs Lee Evans and Terrell Owens. Today, Edwards will be facing some intense
pressure from the Jets, whose head coach, Rex Ryan, loves to blitz a lot. The Bills should use
screens to beat the blitz, but their struggling offensive line has to do a better job keeping
pass rushers off Edwards on longer pass plays. Jets CB Darrelle Revis is an elite talent who
shut down Evans in both meetings last season (eight catches for 63 yards and no TDs). But look
for Revis to match up with Owens, who offers a more physical challenge because of his size.
Mean Green Giant
Jets NT Kris Jenkins swallowed the Bills' interior offensive line while single-handedly
wrecking their running game in the first meeting last season. The 6-4, 360-pound All-Pro is
impossible to block one-on-one or with double teams because of his size, power and surprising
quickness. No one knows this more than Bills C Geoff Hangartner, who played with Jenkins in
Carolina. If RBs Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson are going to have any success, the Bills must
control Jenkins, who keeps blockers off the Jets' playmaking linebackers such as Bart Scott.
Getting off the ground
The Jets ran for 138 yards against the Dolphins on Monday night, but 38 came on fake punts. RB
Thomas Jones, who led the AFC in rushing last season, is off to a slow start, though he does
have five touchdowns. His backup, Leon Washington, is the team's most explosive player but the
Jets are annually criticized for not using him more. The Jets' rushing attack could bounce
back against a Bills run defense that has been more than generous. The expected return of MLB
Paul Posluszny (forearm) will give the front seven a physical presence it has lacked in recent
weeks.
Special teams duel
This matchup is always anticipated because of the coaches: the Bills' Bobby April and the
Jets' Mike Westhoff. Both are good at devising different schemes and coming up with gadgets
such as fake punts and field goals to gain an edge. Bills return man Roscoe Parrish is seeking
a bounce-back day after two critical mistakes last week. With Washington on kickoffs and Jim
Leonhard on punts, the Jets' return game will put pressure on the Bills' struggling coverage
units. Bills P Brian Moorman has averaged more than 50 yards per punt in the last two games.
Jets K Jay Feely has made a franchise record-tying 22 straight field goals.
Subhed TK
Could be a mauling in the Meadowlands. Jets, 27-13.
