Flynn living the dream as draft nears
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:14 AM
There is a little less than a month left in Jonny Flynn's hurried odyssey to the NBA, days filled with hours of grueling sessions with Michael Jordan's personal trainer and tryouts in one city after another.
The pace of the final push probably won't wear on the 20-year-old former Niagara Falls High School and Syracuse University point guard. Remember, Flynn is so full of basketball energy he once played 67 minutes in a six-overtime marathon.
But the effort, Flynn said, is more than worth it, for there is much within his reach. Flynn's
skills are rated so highly that he is expected to be among the first 14 players picked in the
NBA draft June 25, and he may well become the highest-drafted Syracuse player since Carmelo
Anthony went third overall in 2003.
Time constraints may prevent Flynn from playing the drums in his parents' church as often as
in the past, but with the riches that will come, he will be able to help with renovations.
"Any team I play for I'll be grateful for the opportunity to come in and help them win a
championship," Flynn said. "That's what it's all about. This is a dream come true."
Where Flynn will land is anyone's guess, and last week's draft lottery did little to clear up
the picture. Oklahoma's Blake Griffin will likely be selected No. 1 by the Los Angeles
Clippers but after that it's a crapshoot. Teams considering Flynn include the New York Knicks,
New Jersey Nets, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers and Phoenix Suns.
Flynn hasn't had much time to consider a future with the Knicks, which isn't to imply the
thought hasn't crossed his mind. The Knicks earned a lottery position after struggling through
another torturous rebuilding season, so Flynn could be on the board when his favorite team
growing up makes its selection. That's a scenario as nerve-wracking as it is exciting for
Flynn.
"I was a huge, huge Knicks fan growing up and watching Patrick Ewing and their heated rivalry
with the Miami Heat," Flynn said. "There hasn't been a lot to cheer about lately, but they are
still my favorite team."
Flynn has taken many steps very quickly over the last few years. He didn't allow a feeding
frenzy over his recruitment because he decided on Syracuse after his sophomore season at
Niagara Falls. Flynn started 73 games during his career with the Orange and had he stayed four
years he would have challenged Dave Bing as the best point guard ever produced at the school.
"It was a roller coaster but it was a fun roller coaster," Flynn said. "It was the type of
roller coaster with the big, steep drop that you're scared of and then you start screaming for
joy. I couldn't have picked a better school that fit Jonny Flynn than Syracuse University. It
was a heartbreaking decision to leave, almost like breaking up with a girlfriend."
Flynn's immediate business is to prepare for the draft, which he's doing in Chicago under the
eye of renowned trainer Tim Grover at Attack Athletics. Paul Harris, Flynn's high school and
college teammate, also is working with Grover. Harris has also signed with Flynn's agent, Leon
Rose, of the Creative Artists Agency.
Flynn is participating in the NBA Combine in Chicago this week but is not expected to work out
for individual teams until after the Combine.
"Tim Grover is a great guy to get you ready for the NBA draft," Flynn said. "He gets you in
the best shape and gives you the best knowledge possible to go through this rigorous and long
process. You saw how Michael Jordan's body transformed in the time he played. I know in the
short amount of time that I spend with him there won't be a huge transformation with my body
but he'll get my conditioning where it needs to be for the NBA."
Then Flynn can sit back and watch how his dream unfolds.
