Bills' Parrish wants more chances to catch passes
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:14 AM
Buffalo Bills receiver Roscoe Parrish isn't happy about his role but admits there's not much
he can do about it right now.
Parrish stopped short of saying he would welcome a trade. However, he wants more of a chance
to catch the ball and he realizes he may not get it with the Bills.
Asked if he was disappointed he was not dealt before the draft, Parrish said, "No not really.
Well, I don't want to answer too much more or put an emphasis on that. That's all I'm going to
say about it.
"It is what it is right now," Parrish said. "I don't want to say the wrong things right now. I
have maturity. My main role on this team right now is punt returner. You guys see what I can
do. It is what it is."
The addition of Terrell Owens puts Parrish further down the depth chart at receiver. Josh Reed
is the clear-cut top slot receiver on the team. Opportunities for the No. 4 receiver on the
depth chart are going to be even more divided than last season. Second-year man Steve Johnson
has looked good and is likely to get a bit more playing time this season, some of it out of
the slot. Second-year man James Hardy will need to get snaps when he fully recovers from knee
surgery. He's strictly an outside receiver. So Parrish is somewhere between No. 4 and No. 6 on
the receiver pecking order.
For that reason, his name was floated in trade talks before the draft. However, Parrish also
is the two-time defending NFL punt return leader. He averaged 15.3 yards a return last season,
which essentially gives the Bills an extra first down every possession over the poor punt
returning teams in the league.
Do the Bills want to take that away from their power-challenged offense for what would
probably be a late-round draft pick? So far the answer has been no.
"I feel like there's not too much more I can do because I'm going on my fifth year," Parrish
said. "They've seen me. They know my ability and what I can do. It's just I probably haven't
been given the opportunity. The NFL is all about opportunity."
"I know I'm a true receiver," Parrish said. "But I'm going into my fifth year and people
probably don't see that. Who's to say if I went to another team? I'm not saying I want to, but
I might blossom more as a receiver."
Parrish caught 24 passes last season, down from 27 in 2007. But Parrish surpassed 50 yards in
catches in only one game in 2008. Reed has proved too valuable to take off the field as the
slot receiver in the team's eyes, and the offense has not been able to find many other ways to
utilize Parrish's quickness.
Reed missed his first voluntary workout of the spring Thursday. In his absence, Parrish made
several good catches out of the slot.
"As of right now I just know my main role is punt returner," he said. "I made a couple plays
today because Josh Reed wasn't here. If he was here I probably wouldn't have made those plays
today. So I'm just trying to take advantage of my opportunities."
"It's a tough situation for me," Parrish said.
