Updated: August 21, 2010, 12:04 AM
FORT MILL, S. C. — The Buffalo Bisons’ modest four-game winning streak ended with a thud on Sunday. Charlotte rallied for two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand the Herd a 3-2 loss before 2,933 fans at Knights Stadium.
The Herd, which had been 18-0 in games it took a lead into the ninth inning, looked poised to extend its season-long winning streak as Elmer Dessens took the mound in the ninth with a 2-1 lead. The Bisons’ closer had converted his last 11 save opportunities.
Instead, Charlotte’s Josh Kroeger singled and Michael Restovich walked. Dessens recovered to get the next two outs before surrendering a two-run hit down the left field line to Wilson Betemit. Bisons starter Nelson Figueroa ended up with no-decision after retiring 20 of last 21 batters he faced. He went eight innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out eight. Box score
Charlotte took a 1-0 lead as Brandon Allen scored on Cole Armstrong’s single in the second inning. Armstrong’s hit was the last for the Knights until the eighth.
In the Bisons fifth, Michel Abreu led off with a walk. Two batters later, Javier Castillo singled. With two aboard and two out, Argenis Reyes singled up the middle to plate two runs for a 2-1 lead. It was one of three hits in the game for Reyes.
Buffalo takes a 2-1 series advantage into today’s finale (12:15 p. m., Radio 1520 AM) with Brandon Knight (4-5, 4.26 ERA) scheduled to start for the Bisons against Jack Egbert (4-2, 5.10).
