Florida to drop charge against Bills fullback McIntyre
Updated: August 20, 2010, 11:44 PM
Authorities in Florida said Wednesday that Buffalo Bills fullback Corey McIntyre has been cleared of a charge of sexual exposure that was made against him last month.
The State Attorney’s Office in West Palm Beach, Fla., said Wednesday the victim’s identification of Mc- Intyre as the suspect was questionable, and prosecutors planned to file paperwork to formally drop the charge.
Another possible suspect has been arrested in a similar case, police said.
McIntyre was arrested last month on a misdemeanor charge of exposing his sexual organs following an alleged incident March 20 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. A 59-year-old woman told police she saw a man fondling himself outside the window of her home, and she identified McIntyre as the man.
However in follow-up meetings with prosecutors, the woman said she never actually saw the man’s genitals and could not positively identify Mc- Intyre.
“I just want to say I’m happy my name has been cleared today,” McIntyre said after the Bills’ practice in Orchard Park. “I have maintained my innocence all through this process and I’m just glad it’s out of the way. I’m sorry for the embarrassment to my family and to the Bills, and now my focus is on training camp.”
McIntrye, 30, joined the Bills last September and appeared in 11 games last season. He initially was detained by police while riding his bicycle on the same route he took every morning as part of his workout routine.
On Monday, authorities arrested a man accused of exposing himself June 2 in the same area where McIntyre had been riding his bike, said officer Thomas Nichols of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
Said McIntyre’s attorney, Brett Tessler: “Like I said from the start, Corey is the last guy who would have done what he was accused of, and we are very pleased that these absurd and utterly ridiculous charges have been dropped. However, they never should have been filed in the first place, and Corey, his family and the Bills never should have been subjected to this kind of pain and embarrassment.”
Police acknowledged the only similarities between McIntyre and the latest suspect arrested is that they are both black and have dreadlocks. The new suspect, Eddie Dean Scott, weighs about 150 pounds. McIntyre weighs 258.
Bills receiver Terrell Owens is holding his fourth annual football camp on June 24-25 in Duncanville, Texas, near Dallas. However, he has teamed with a local radio station, 97 Rock, to hold a contest that will send one Buffalo-area boy on an all-expenses paid trip to the camp. The contest begins today. Local football coaches are welcome to call the station to nominate the player of their choice—age 7 to 17—to attend the camp, for whatever reason. The winner will be announced Monday.
Owens said the plans for the Dallas- area camp were set well before his release by the Cowboys in March.
“A lot of kids had already applied and were definitely looking forward to it,” Owens said. “We had a great time the first few years we’ve done it. The camp has grown, and I’m looking for a bigger crowd this year. . . . I could have done the camp here [in Buffalo] but I’d already scheduled it. So we’re going to give a kid [from Buffalo] a chance to come out.”
The Bills practiced for 90 minutes Wednesday on the grass field behind the fieldhouse. Cornerback Leodis McKelvin returned from a finger injury. He worked mostly with the second teamers. Running back Marshawn Lynch, who was walking with a limp, sat out. So did receiver Roscoe Parrish, who appeared to tweak a calf muscle Tuesday.
