Senior associate athletics director and longtime women’s basketball coach Dr. Gail F. Maloney announced her retirement from Buffalo State College, effective Tuesday.

Best known for her 21-year career as Buffalo State’s women’s basketball coach, Maloney amassed a record of 374-154 (.708). Her teams captured seven State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships and made nine trips to the NCAA playoffs.

“I never felt like it was work, and each day brought on a new challenge,” Maloney said of her career at the college. “No two days were ever the same, and I am not so sure how many people can say that after 31 years at the same place.”

“She was a constant advocate for all of our student-athletes, and her commitment to the growth and equity of women’s sports not only at Buffalo State, but across the SUNYAC, had an immeasurable impact on the opportunities women have today,” said Buffalo State Athletic Director Jerry Boyes.

Maloney served in administrative roles with the Intercollegiate Athletics Department. She was interim director before assuming the position as senior associate director of athletics in 2001. She was instrumental in adding six women’s varsity sports at the college and was a driving force in the construction of the Sports Complex.

In addition to stints coaching softball and field hockey at Buffalo State, Maloney served on various NCAA and SUNYAC committees and was SUNYAC president in 1997-98.

She is considered one of the area’s foremost experts on Title IX, the subject of her doctoral dissertation at the University at Buffalo.
