Lancaster’s Melissa Kurzdorfer and Lockport’s Erin Miller took the “Big Apple” by storm Sunday, with Kurzdorfer doing something she had never done before—winning a national title.

Kurzdorfer’s final attempt in the weight throw earned her the national championship in the event, while she and Miller each took All-American honors in the shot put during the National Scholastic indoor track and field championships at the Armory Track in New York City.

Kurzdorfer, the junior and three-time state champion in the shot put, won the weight throw with an effort of 54-11 1/2.

“It was very exciting, stepping out on the podium in front of all those people,” Kurzdorfer told The News by phone.

“It’s unbelievable, to be able to come down to the last throw and win a national championship is incredible,” said George Rak, Kurzdorfer’s coach.

The top two throwers in Section VI finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put. Kurzdorfer, the state-record holder (48-2 1/2) in the shot, had an off day and took second with a throw of 46-8 1/4. North Babylon’s Vanessa Stewart won with a throw of 47-5 1/4.

The University at Buffalo-bound Miller popped a career-best throw of 45-2 1/2.

At the scholastic Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston, Canisius High School’s Jordan Hamm finished 13th in the mile in 4:21.36, while Crusaders teammate Barry Fitzgerald took 36th in the 800-meter dash in 2:00.40.
