Bills talk to Keiaho and Jones

Another linebacker who looks like a good fit for Buffalo and another insurance policy for the offensive backfield visited One Bills Drive Thursday.

The Bills met with linebacker Freddie Keiaho, who started the past two years for the Indianapolis Colts, and running back Kevin Jones, a former No. 1 draft pick of the Detroit Lions. Also meeting with Bills coaches was 37-year-old receiver Joey Galloway.

Keiaho is another smallish but fast linebacker who fits the Tony Dungy-style defense that Buffalo runs. A three-year veteran, he was a restricted free agent this year, and the Colts did not make him a tender offer. If they had done so, they would have gotten a third-round pick in return if he signed with another team. It’s possible the Colts’ tight salary cap situation was the reason, since Keiaho would have commanded a $1.01 million offer.

Keiaho, 26, is three years younger than Cato June, the former Colts and Bucs linebacker who visited the Bills Wednesday. June, about 235, looks bigger in the upper body than Keiaho, listed at 226. But Keiaho was just as effective against the run in Indy as June. Keiaho led the Colts in tackles this year with 105.

“It would be very easy to make the transition,” Keiaho said. “A lot of the terminology carries over.”

Jones, if he can stay healthy, could be a strong third option at running back behind Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. Jones rushed for 1,133 yards and a 4.7- yard average for Detroit in 2004. However, foot and knee injuries slowed him down the next three years.

Jones had a Lisfranc’s dislocation of his foot late in the 2006 season. He returned to start 10 games in 2007 and scored eight rushing touchdowns. He won the team’s Ed Block Courage award for making the difficult recovery. Late in 2007, he tore ligaments in his knee. He played for Chicago in 2008 and carried only 34 times all season. When healthy, the 5-foot-11, 228-pound Jones is a powerful runner with some receiving ability.

Galloway had 57 catches for 1,014 yards and a whopping 17.4- yard average as a 36-year-old in 2007 in Tampa Bay. He also had 1,000-yard seasons in 2005 and 2006. Galloway missed most of last season with a foot injury suffered in preseason and managed just 13 catches in five games. Galloway visited New England on Wednesday. The Patriots acquired another receiver, Greg Lewis, via trade from Philadelphia on Thursday.
