NEW YORK — Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso lost out on the NFL’s Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year award on Saturday night.
Alonso was one of three candidates for the award, which went to the New York Jets’ Sheldon Richardson.
“It’s a tremendous honor to even be up for a prestigious award like this,” Alonso said prior to the announcement, which came inside Radio City Music Hall.
Alonso said he felt his play on the field validated his rookie year. He took all 1,145 defensive snaps this year, leading the Bills with 159 tackles and tying for a team high with four interceptions.
“There was definitely a lot of room for improvement, but I’m proud of what I did on the field,” Alonso said. “It felt great to play every snap. My goal was to help the team as much as I could. Being on the field every snap, it’s something I’m proud of. I met my goal I set at the beginning of the year.”
