Xena takes on Spartacus
Celebrity Gossip
Remember Xena the Warrior Princess? OK, she was a made-up character for a TV series, but the imposing Lucy Lawless played her. (An actress who once, briefly, worked as gold miner in Australia!) I lost track of Lucy after “Xena” went off the air, but now she’s heading back to the small screen in a familiar genre.
She will appear as Lucretia in “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.” This is the true-life tale of the great slave revolt against the Romans, led by Spartacus. Kirk Douglas created him memorably on the big screen, back in 1960. For this version, Australian actor Andy Whitfield will play the reluctant gladiator/rebel leader. And this cable effort for the Starz network is no cheap deal. The director is Sam Raimi of the “Evil Dead” and “Spider Man” movies.

Warner Bros. is metaphorically puttin’ on its top hat, brushin’ off its tails. They are making big plans to reveal Number Six in the “Harry Potter’ movie series this coming July. And just think, we’ll still have two more movies starring Harry after that!

In the matter of Rihanna having a revolver tattooed on her right side—I’d really like to hear an explanation as to what exactly that means to this beautiful star? The New York Daily News seems to be saying that her CoverGirl endorsement people won’t be happy with this tattoo turn. But then, can’t she use CoverGirl to cover it up?

The famous Mandrake column of London notes that Uma Thurman once was cast as the mythical Venus (that was in “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen”) and now she will be cast as Medusa, the snake-haired deity who turns mortals to stone. (This happens in the fantasy film “Percy Jackson.”) In this movie, Pierce Brosnan will play the centaur Chiron and Sean Bean will take a crack at being the mighty Zeus.

Madonna’s ex, director Guy Ritchie, is not only being complimented for no longer being wed to La Ciccone, he himself is crowing over his freedom. He told an interviewer the other day: “I’m single again and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is what I’ve been missing!”
He is also missing out on having to travel to Malawi again with Madonna, while she attempts another controversial adoption. He was not keen on the first, though he is quite fond of little David Banda. As for Madonna, the big news to come out of her latest trek to Malawi is her escort—an astonishingly grown up 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes. The child looks to be about an inch taller than mom al-ready. Well, her father, Carlos Leon, is very tall. (Carlos, once a fitness trainer, now an actor, is a sweetheart. And I dare say the nicest guy Madonna ever loved and lost. Er, discarded?)
In the photos and footage of Lourdes, she looks eerily like the young Madonna.

Back when teen heartthrob Zac Efron was announced to do the remake of “Footloose,” I admitted Zac was indeed a cutie, but no Kevin Bacon—there are more than six degrees of talent and appeal separating these two! The original movie was perfect, anyway, why mess around with it?
Well, even though the director of the new “Footloose” was Kenny Ortega, who has helmed all those “High School Musicals,” which propelled Zac to stardom, the young actor pulled out of the project. But, Ortega, and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are forging ahead. They are all looking at hottie Chace Crawford, from the wildly popular “Gossip Girl” TV series. He, too, is very attractive, and who knew he could dance? But, again—Kevin Bacon owns this role.
