Burnett: Bad to the bone
The great television star Carol Burnett was in NYC this week filming for a coming “Law&Order.” When I asked if she would be playing one of the perennial “celebrity” judges on this beloved series, she laughed: “No, I have a serious role. I am a bad guy. Listen, I’m a great villain!”
You can see the beloved Carol Burnett doing her worst in this outing, which will play on St. Patrick’s Day.

Do you wonder what made Madonna fall in love (or lust) with Jesus Luz, even though she is only 50 and he is 22?
It was easy. There were four stunning male animals on call for Madonna’s photo shoot with Women’s Wear Daily. She came into the studio, took a look at the four guys, pointed at Jesus and said, “That one!” The rest is history. (And so, apparently is A-Rod. Mr. Luz doesn’t need steroids to hit a home run.)
Of course, Madonna calls her new guy, “Hay-suess!” (Jesus is another matter.)

Not everybody is so happy with the “Slumdog Millionaire” Oscar win. Take director Edward Zwick who had his own movie “Defiance” in the contest. He says “Slumdog” marks a sea change for the movie biz. The big-budget blockbusters are always going to be around, but, as for the more modest and more intelligent films put out by the smaller independents, I’m not so sure. I just hope I am still going to be around after the dust settles, to make movies.”
Hmm. I was watching “Singing in the Rain” the other night, taking a nostalgia trip. It’s about what happened when talkies supplanted silent movies. History will repeat itself.

Cher! This miracle woman gets admiration in spades in the new Biography documentary about Meryl Streep. They say Cher’s turn as Meryl’s lesbian pal in the movie “Silkwood” is one of cinema’s great outings, showing an embracing palship, the kind usually enjoyed by male actors.
Cher returned to Las Vegas on Feb. 21. There, she’ll most likely perform until she is at least age 29.
Nothing stops this eternally triumphant woman. The other night she fell over a cowboy hat onstage and banged her lovely knees. The crowd gasped but Cher just laughed—still clutching her microphone— and carried on. Fans usually throw sailor hats onstage during “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Cher said, “I should know better about cowboy hats, unless there’s a really cute guy underneath the hat!”
You have to love this most enjoyable of all divas in concert or anywhere else. Cher produces hits and more hits. She feels we are challenged enough by life and she wants to make us have fun. Not bad for these times.

One of my favorite women in film is Christine Lahti, who won both the Emmy and the Golden Globe for playing a doctor on “Chicago Hope.” (Christine also became “famous” for being in the bathroom when they called her name at the Globes! She hasn’t lived that down yet.)
Asked if she might play a nude scene, as Marisa Tomei, Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren have done, Christine winces: “I don’t think I look that great at 59. I might consider an extremely long shot if it was pertinent to the story. But then, no, I don’t think so. It would be turned to porn on the Internet. I am so impressed, however, with how Kate Winslet is so comfortable in her nude scenes.”
