HELPING HANDS—Recently diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma, Joel Fleckenstein, a senior at Springville-Griffith Institute High School, is in need of a bone marrow transplant.

To help with his expenses, friends and family are holding a fundraiser starting at 11 a. m. Sunday in the Springville Volunteer Fire Hall, 405 W. Main St. There will be basket auctions, a silent auction, a bake sale and a Chiavetta’s chicken barbecue. Joel’s favorite band— Guns of Camden—and others will provide music. THINK ORANGE— Thursday is the deadline for reservations for the annual Fred E. Machemer Scholarship Banquet at 7 p. m. Sunday in Ilio DiPaolo’s Restaurant, 3785 South Park Ave., Blasdell. Sponsored by the Syracuse University Alumni Club of Western New York, it’s also open to current students, incoming students and friends of SU, which should include just about everyone.

Bob Casullo, assistant head football coach, will be on hand. Emcee will be WIVB-TV sports director John Murphy, Class of ’78. Honored with this year’s Outstanding Alumni Award will be W.Belle Montree, the first African-American woman to become vice president for behavioral health service at Child &Family Services. She earned her master’s degree at Syracuse in 1988.

For info and reservations, call 695-1679 or 542-4148. Tickets are $30 for alumni, $35 for non-alumni. It’s free for students and 2009 graduates. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

OOPS!—Two more things you need to know about the sixth annual Empty Bowls fundraising event that we should have mentioned Tuesday:

• The date—it’s from noon to 3 p. m. Sunday in the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College.

• The free lunch—you have to buy a bowl to get it. Most of the handmade bowls made by students and artists will sell for under $10, with proceeds benefiting the Food Bank of Western New York and Friends of Night People. For info, call 878-3787.

SPRING FLING—The KPL Society, started six years ago in memory of Kevin Patrick Lalley of South Buffalo, will hold its sixth annual spring social and drawing from 1 to 5 p. m. Sunday in Ironworkers Hall, 196 Orchard Park Road, West Seneca.

Donation is $25 and includes beer, wine, pop, food and prizes. All proceeds benefit the KPL Society’s charitable donations to needy families and for scholarships at area high schools. Tickets are limited. For information, call the Blackthorn Restaurant and Pub at 825-9327 or Hugger Adymy at 541-5861.
