LIVING MEMORY — James Luke Bierl, an 18-year-old Erie Community College student who lost his life May 14 in a car accident not far from his Hamburg home, is missed in more ways than one. Luke’s neighborhood remembers him as the best Buffalo News carrier it ever had. A graduate of St. Francis High School, he also was a shift manager for a John and Mary’s shop and worked at Braymiller’s Bowling Alley.

Now there’s an effort to establish a memorial fund in his name to provide scholarships to deserving St. Francis and Hamburg High graduates who want to attend ECC and work toward a four-year degree, like Luke was doing.

A fundraising event, including a golf outing, will be held next Monday at Gowanda Country Club, and donations for door prizes and sponsorships are being lined up by Luke’s neighbor, Joe Gervase. To help out, call him at 649-8155 or 868-6168.
