CENTURY MARK — They’re having a 100th birthday celebration for Evelyn Manley of South Buffalo on Saturday and it will not be a small affair. Family and friends are getting together in Our Lady of Bistrica Hall on Abbott Road in Lackawanna to honor her on reaching the milestone.
Her daughter, Eleanor Neri, says her mother’s goal is to outlive HER mother, the late Emma Schill, who made it to just short of 102. Born July 25, 1908, in the Old First Ward, she married Charles Manley, a tug boat captain who died in the 1960s, and they raised five children, one of whom is former South Council Member Dennis Manley. After her husband’s death, she worked for the City of Buffalo as an aide in the senior centers.
Mrs. Manley lives independently with help from her children, belongs to the Valley Community Center Senior Citizens and is a member of St. Theresa’s Church, where she was president of the Woman’s Club. A devoted Yankees fan, she watches them faithfully on TV.
