TRAGEDY AVERTED — Hats off to three members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for their heroic efforts during a break in their state convention a week ago Saturday in Adam’s Mark Hotel.
Two of them — Tom McGowan, an EMT from Lyons, and Otto Madsen III, a paramedic from Cohoes — came upon an emergency situation in the pool area. Seeing a young man who was attempting chest compression on an unconscious girl age 5 or 6 who was just pulled from the water, they took over resuscitation efforts.
They turned her on her side to help clear her breathing passages, then continued chest compression until the girl, who had been unresponsive, began to show a pulse and started breathing again. A third Elk, Dave Brown from Ballston Spa, called 911 and was a liaison to emergency dispatchers until Buffalo Fire Department crews arrived.
By then, the girl, although shaken and confused, was able to talk. An ambulance took her to a hospital for further treatment. Reports came back later that she was doing well.
