Sr. Karen Peace Garden another place of serenity
I enjoyed the article “Summertime serenity” and was grateful for the sites that were highlighted. I would like people to know of another place to experience peace and solitude. And believe it or not, it’s right in the heart of downtown Buffalo: the Sr. Karen Peace Garden. It’s located on the property of Ss. Columba-Brigid Church at 75 Hickory St., near Clinton.
In the midst of the flowers and greenery, there are numerous plaques that contain quotes from people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, John Lennon, Joan Baez, Jesus and Dorothy Day, focused on the themes of peace and non-violence.
The garden also has a monument stone inscribed with the letter that Sr. Karen wrote to the man who would end up murdering her, which she wrote 10 years before it happened. It contains a message of forgiveness and hope. Other stones reveal thoughts she wrote on these themes in her journal. People can walk on the brick path and then sit peacefully on benches to reflect and experience an inner peace and joy.
