Spring is a great time to kick smoking habit

With spring weather in the air, promises of fresh starts are upon us. Spring clean your life. Why not take the opportunity to quit smoking for good? Think about how great it would be if you stopped smoking, and what it would be like to wake up every morning feeling completely fresh and free, with more energy, more money and more life.

Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Nonetheless, quitting is not an easy thing to do. I know you may be asking yourself, why quit? There are several immediate and long-term health benefits to kicking the habit. For example, 20 minutes after your last cigarette there will be noticeable decreases in your blood pressure and pulse rate. These positive effects continue weeks, months and years later. Fifteen years after your last puff, your risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a nonsmoker.

New Yorkers can call the Quitline at 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487). During the hours that the Quitline is closed, there are taped messages offering support and help. The Smokers’ Quitsite (www.nysmokefree.com) is available 24 hours per day. When you call, a quit coach will work with you to develop a personalized plan and provide you with information that will help you quit tobacco. During the call, your quit coach may ask you specific questions about your quitting history, tobacco use and/or motivations to quit, which will help the coach create a plan that will work for you. Some callers are eligible for nicotine patches. Any information you provide or discuss with your quit coach during the call is completely confidential.
