SAFE Act’s passage aims to garner votes for Cuomo
When will gun opponents become realistic as to what is actually happening? The recent shooting of a Florida teenager was indeed a heinous act of violence, but this is New York and not Florida. If the letter writer had been more knowledgeable, he should have known that New York State already had in place some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Can making our state’s gun laws even more restrictive and prohibitive guarantee unmitigated safety for our residents? It can surely cause frustration for the vast numbers of individuals who are being punished for the few miscreants.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s midnight passage of the SAFE Act was poorly researched as to the realities of what was additionally needed. In truth, nothing more was necessary on the existing, very restrictive state gun laws. However, what was already in place doesn’t win more votes.
As to the writer’s critique of the First and Second Amendments’ interpretation, let me suggest his reading of an earlier document. “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence should be in Cuomo’s mind for the protection of all individuals, born and unborn. But for Gov. Hypocrite, this moral principle won’t garner enough votes.
