Preventing incarceration should be our top priority
The governor’s most recent proposal to provide free tuition for inmates is beyond ridiculous. If the intended goal is to reduce recidivism, how about addressing this by reducing initial incarcerations in the first place? We can best accomplish this more realistic goal by providing more support to schools, parenting and family programs for at-risk kids and better counseling and mental health services to families in need.
Prevention should be the desired outcome. If we are able to do this, we will save a great deal of money and, more importantly, much pain and suffering of those who have been hurt. Once again our governor has missed the mark and is more concerned with grabbing headlines than actually helping the residents of New York.
