Let’s stop using the Bible to condemn, judge others

I am writing in response to the June 8 letter from a local reverend titled, “Reject gay lifestyle and return to God.” I am so tired of people quoting the Bible to judge and condemn people. Women have been oppressed for thousands of years because of a few verses in the Bible. Slave owners used verses to condone their use of slavery.

I am no biblical scholar by any stretch of the imagination, but I do know a few verses. These are the few verses I try to live by: “Do not judge lest ye be judged,” “Remove the log from your own eye” and “Love thy neighbor.”

In the New Testament, Jesus said the most important of all commandments is to love thy neighbor. Even if you are not a believer in Jesus or of a higher power, if everyone loved their neighbor as themselves, we would live in a much better world. Stop using the Bible to bring hatred and discord into the world.
