Friday night hockey is a wonderful tradition

Last fall, as September rolled around, something started that has happened since 1983 – men still trying to be boys played hockey on Friday night at Cazenovia Rink in South Buffalo. The group of originals is small, but many of the men have been coming for 10, 20 and even 25 years.

The group has seen the high points of the birth and arrival of many children. One of the great thrills is having your son join the group. A few have even had three sons play the same night. Another regular player had his 74-year-old father join us many times.

Low points include the passing of family members. The group waited years to be old enough to play in the old boys tournaments around Buffalo. We won a few and now could almost field an over-50 team.

In this day and age when you don’t see people very often – maybe a text here and there or an update on social media – I feel it is a great accomplishment to have played this long as a group.
