Cast of ‘Les Miserables’ put on an excellent show
I was privileged to be in the full-house audience on May 1 to see the University at Buffalo Drama Department’s production of “Les Miserables.” Having seen the show on Broadway five times and having listened to the original cast album numerous times, I was a little nervous to see how the school and students would handle such an ambitious show. This show lives and dies based on the playing and singing of its soaring score.
I need not have been worried, as the orchestra and cast handled the show brilliantly. The voices were uniformly excellent; even the actor who valiantly played the demanding role of Inspector Javert with a bad cold. It gave an added dimension of determination to that role. So my kudos to the program and students for doing such a fine job.
I have to say, however, that I was disappointed not to see a review of the production in The News. I think the performance was equal to that of other local theater groups and merited the attention of a full review. I hope The News will accord that respect to future productions of the SUNY Drama Department.
