Abortion is still an issue for many good reasons
This letter is in response to the Jan. 21 Another Voice column by the CEO of Planned Parenthood. Karen Nelson begins by commenting on the fact that abortion is still a big issue 41 years after being made legal. But 41 years ago, the words were “safe, legal and rare.” More than 50 million abortions have taken place since then, so Nelson has dropped the “rare” part of that. That huge number is one of the reasons it continues to be a big issue.
As for the “safe” part, a number of the laws passed by the states attempt to require abortion facilities to have the same health standards as medical clinics. According to Nelson, this is “bogus,” but why would people operating a safe facility object?
Nelson is correct in writing that a woman’s life today involves a complexity of issues and a majority of the measures put forth in the Women’s Equality Act are very much needed. But an “upgrade” (as she put it) on abortion law would mean many more late-term abortions taking place in New York State and it would allow a non-physician to perform an abortion. Think about that. Become informed about the Women’s Equality Act and contact your state representatives to pass the items of the act that really do help and protect women.
