Proposed Iran sanctions derail diplomatic efforts

The recently proposed Iranian sanctions are a step in the wrong direction that kill the diplomatic efforts of the State Department. The bipartisan sanctions, introduced in the Senate with the support of both New York senators, tie the hands of the State Department and prove to the world that we are not serious in our negotiations with Iran.

The Iranian people have shown they want change (Twitter Revolution of 2009, election of Rouhani 2013) and yet the United States continues to punish them with economic sanctions. These sanctions do nothing to stop nuclear proliferation. Rather than continually punishing the Iranian citizens with economic sanctions, we should allow the State Department to continue diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful resolution to the Iranian nuclear problem.
