Local blood donors provide lifesaving gift

Upstate New York Transplant Services is a very successful nonprofit organization in Western New York. It has provided organ and blood procurement services since 1981. UNYTS has a presence through its mobile blood donation van, in high schools and colleges, and at Bills and Sabres games. What may go unseen is that UNYTS collaborates with doctors, hospitals, nurses, social workers and other medical professionals to make a profound impact on our region. These people do a lot of behind-the-scenes work that most of the public is not aware of.

I never considered how great the need is – whether it’s a preemie in a hospital’s neonatal unit, or an elderly individual suffering from a blood disorder, or a leukemia patient in need of blood or platelets. The demand for donations is so high that if you can’t donate, you should encourage other people to donate in your place. The simple process of giving blood can impact others in a way that some of us don’t realize. So the next time you pass by a UNYTS donation center, think of the impact your donation could have on an entire family. Go in there and give someone you don’t know a chance by donating blood.
