Great to see city schools embrace Meatless Monday

As a lifelong Buffalo area resident, I applaud the Buffalo School District for joining the growing Meatless Monday movement, which dates back to World War I and encourages Americans to eat entirely meat-free one day a week.

Participating in Meatless Mondays can help billions of animals raised for food in our country. Farm animals, like dogs and cats, have personalities, needs and the capacity to suffer. Yet our industrial food system often treats them like units on a production line with little consideration for their suffering.

There are many reasons to go meat-free at least once a week. Whether it’s to improve our health, the environment, or to help prevent animal suffering, choosing meat-free meals one day a week is a real win-win.
