Gaughan possesses finance background

The News’ recent article analyzing the county comptroller contest between Kevin Gaughan and Stefan Mychajliw added needed perspective on the race. But I thought its premise that neither candidate possesses finance background was less than accurate.

A review of Gaughan’s website reveals that he has practiced finance law for more than 25 years, and has advised private and public companies on bond offerings and other fiscal matters. As a Harvard University graduate, who also studied at the London School of Economics, he can hardly be described as someone who lacks an economics and finance background.

Perhaps most important, Gaughan is the activist who has published several studies on the fiscal state of every local government in Erie County. To boot, he found a way for voters to have a say in those costs by causing a number of public referendums.

Mychajliw certainly has his life skills, but they lie in the fields of media and public relations. For the news article to assert that Gaughan’s and Mychajliw’s backgrounds are comparable is a stretch.
