Encourage Delaware North to use existing office space

Much has been written lately about the Delaware North/Uniland project. The problem is not with the incentives offered to Delaware North, but rather with those requested by Uniland. How can we possibly justify subsidizing a new office building when over a million square feet of Class A office space is about to hit the market?

One would think that we would be much better served using the incentives requested by Uniland to encourage Delaware North to remain in existing office space. Why waste taxpayer money subsidizing a new office building that will only exacerbate the impending real estate crisis when the former HSBC Center hits the market sometime next year?

It is incumbent upon our economic development officials to get ahead of the situation and structure a second incentive package that not only encourages Delaware North to remain in downtown Buffalo, but also to do so within existing office space. Let’s support Delaware North, but let’s do so in a way that makes sense for all of downtown Buffalo and the taxpayers of Western New York.
