Elementary education should revise its goals

I have just finished reading yet another article concerning the new Common Core curriculum. Once again the stated goal appears.

What is this goal that is causing so many problems for all involved? The goal is to better prepare students for college and careers. This sounds reasonable enough. However, people seem to be forgetting that children do not have to be prepared for college and a career after kindergarten. As a matter of fact, they will not be entering college or the work force after elementary school or middle school.

Let the children be children. Learning to read and acquiring a good base in math and the sciences, along with respect for one another, should be the main goal of elementary education. After that, the possibilities are endless.
