Cruz may have to apply for U.S. citizenship

Born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father, Sen. Ted Cruz believes that he was born an American citizen and has dual citizenship. My 15- and 17-year-old Canadian-born grandsons believe that they must apply for American citizenship by the age of 18 and are about to do so. To gain American citizenship, they understand that they must reject their Canadian citizenship. Fortunately Canada does not permit its citizens to reject their citizenship. Therefore, dual citizenship.

If Cruz did not apply for citizenship in his teens, he may be only a citizen of Canada – forever. If he wants American citizenship, he may have to apply with other immigrants.
