It’s time to toughen penalties for accidents

Story tools:

The recent rash of serious “accidents” makes me think we must define accident. An accident is something that couldn’t be avoided, that just happens. Auto accidents do not fall into this category. They are caused by doing something wrong—texting, running a stop sign, alcohol or drugs, talking on the phone, the list goes on.

Drivers who pay 100 percent attention to their driving do not have accidents. Isn’t it time to treat accidents as they really are, assault with a deadly weapon? Accelerator or trigger, the results are the same. Serious jail time and loss of license for life might get people’s attention.
