Proposed budget cuts will hurt many children
Gov. David Paterson has proposed new budget cuts that, if enacted, will have a significant, detrimental effect on children and families in Buffalo, many of whom are living in poverty.
Boys&Girls Clubs of Buffalo has already experienced significant state budget cuts this year and there is now a proposal to cut an additional 10 percent for many of our programs. While we are aware of our state’s fiscal problems, we disagree strenuously that the budget gaps should be closed on the backs of children and families already struggling to make ends meet.
Boys&Girls Clubs of Buffalo provides quality after-school programs, educational support and hot meals to thousands of families. Most critically, we provide a safe, positive alternative for children to being home alone after school, or worse, finding refuge on the streets where drugs, gangs and violence are prevalent.
Without quality, affordable after-school options, many parents will find it more difficult to hold or perform their jobs without the added worry of their children’s safety and well-being.
We urge state legislators to reject cuts that will have a disproportionate, adverse impact on the most vulnerable in our community—our children.
