Region boasts many affordable attractions
As a resident of Western New York for the last 40-plus years, I am constantly reminded of what this area has to offer for a family with a limited budget. During the previous week, my wife and I had the joy of caring for three of our grandsons ages 8, 7 and 5.
Since we live in Williamsville on a quiet street, they had the opportunity to bike in safety. They also took ample use of the Williamsville pool at Clearfield. The Buffalo Zoo and Science Museum were also visited. Another day was spent at Fantasy Island. The boys all agreed it was the best amusement park—all this for the cost of one person going to Disney World.
What impressed me most about the Science Museum and the zoo was the number of families and businesses that have given money and lent their support to these cultural icons. Also impressive was the condition of these places. I can remember the zoo 30 years ago, when the animals had only small cages. Now they can be viewed in areas that would be familiar habitats. The work done with the sea otters, sea lions, gorillas and the rain forest pavilion is all first class.
Although we may be considered a small city in a Rust Belt region of the country, our family attractions makes it a first-rate city to raise children on an affordable budget.
