Name the courthouse in honor of Des Forges
Walt Whitman wrote, “A great city is that which has the greatest men and women.” Buffalo has been matchless in producing people of the highest character who distinguish this community around the world.
Alison Des Forges was a titan in our midst. She was a champion for human rights. Her acts and deeds in my opinion place this city a cut above all others. Her struggle against genocide in Africa was brave and noble. Des Forges was a tireless advocate for those who were neither powerful or rich. Her life focused on bringing action to the words that all people have the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of freedom.
Des Forges was a person who spent countless hours in an effort to stop mass murder in Rwanda and numerous years to bring justice to those who employed terror and mass murder against a civilian population. Her life was based on the ideals of just dealing and right actions. In my opinion there is no other person who has lived in Buffalo whom more rightly deserves to be honored.
The new Federal Court House in Buffalo should be named after Alison Des Forges.
