Parental control is gone, as kids do as they please
At 44 years old, I have finally come to the conclusion that the world of parent/ child relationships is heading in the wrong direction. What happened to the parents running the show? How have the lunatics come to run the asylum?
When my parents told me to do or not to do something, I obeyed. I did this for three reasons: respect, fear and, most of all, they had the means to provide me with what I wanted.
How is that my children talk back to me, tell me no or flat-out ignore my directions? It’s not as if I am asking them to harm themselves. Directives such as “do what your mother says,” “pick up your shoes,” “hang your coat” or “clean your room” go unheeded.
Now for the worst part. Our parents and other relatives, strict disciplinarians that they were, pass judgment on me for disciplining my kids. What has happened to these people? Why do they seem to think it’s OK for my children to publicly disrespect me when they most certainly would have taken the belt to us 30-plus years ago?
