Disgruntled employees make work dreary for all
Reflecting on Chris Collins’ casual shirt and cap attire for Erie County employees, (July 10 News) I find the idea refreshing and an honest gesture of promoting employee spirit and pride.
As a former Erie County employee in the Finance Department, Division of Real Property, I, too, participated in and promoted a similar program initiated by a co-worker in the County Clerk’s Office. It made me feel good every Friday to wear my navy polo with white lettering “Erie County Finance, Real Property” embroidered on it. I’d even wear it later that day if I was out for a fish fry or shopping.
The pride is there. It always has been. There are, however, a few disgruntled employees who feel underpaid and misdirect their frustration toward their employer or, in this case, the county executive. These same employees applied, took exams and accepted the pay for the jobs they now hold and probably have held for quite some time. They could move on and find jobs elsewhere, but they choose to stay and complain, and that makes for a dreary workplace for others who are grateful for a steady job with retirement benefits.
