It seems to us . . .

A Halloween omen for the Statler, water scares and doctor costumes

Story tools:

MESSAGE FROM ABOVE: We feel for the investors who delivered their delayed down payment for the Statler on Wednesday—just hours before a chunk of the cornice fell off, smashing on the street far below.

That can’t be too encouraging. Maybe they should have kicked the tires, first. Or the cornice.

BOTTLED GENIUS: Of all the arguments we’ve heard for or against expanding the bottle deposit mandate to bottled water, the one that befuddles us most goes something like this: These are tough economic times, and adding a deposit to water bottles will hurt those who can least afford it.

Hello? The deposits are returnable, and last we looked bottled water wasn’t exactly a necessity. You can get healthier stuff—or at least more thoroughly screened stuff—just by turning on the tap.

WHITE OUT: Did we just use that chilling term? Oh, sorry. But in the category of getting a head start on Halloween, the White House wins—for passing out white lab coats to doctors who attended an Obama speech that was really just a photo op designed to make the prez look good. Scary.
