Inside the News: Jerry Zremski blogged on a historic climate change bill that has drawn strong criticism from Republicans, who argue that the bill would push energy prices higher. Ed R commented:
1,200 pages and no one knows what’s in it. Everything is moving too fast in this Congress. [President] Obama just wants it passed without debate and [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi agrees. The Senate will scrutinize this bill and will not pass it.
Don H added this:
The positive effect of this bill is much in doubt. How much of a difference in global warming will result, when China continues to open a new coal-fired electric producing plant every two weeks and the developing nations have no limits on carbon producing emissions? One thing is not in doubt. The cap and trade part of this legislation will cause the cost of electricity to rise steeply. How does this help the consumer, industry and job creation? The administration continues the rush to economic calamity.

Outrages & Insights: A blog by James Heaney addressed a call by Rudolph Giuliani for a state constitutional convention and Rick Lazio’s counter-call to get rid of the Senate and Assembly and replace it with “a new legislative branch comprised of a single body.” Rob noted:
While in theory a constitutional convention is a good idea and should be supported, in practice it might not fix our problems.
Think about it this way: Who is going to be the ones appointed to revise the constitution? The power brokers currently running things. They’ll make sure their unions, special interests and such get their piece of the pie at the expense of everybody else. I don’t hold up much hope for substantive change. The only thing you can do about this is move. Go somewhere else, take your business and leave.

Sully on Sports: Jerry Sullivan’s blog comment on the Sabres draft and the recruitment of young talent, perhaps to compete for the Stanley Cup, led abdul to opine:
They need to fashion a roster that can win right now. We are approaching July 1, 2009, the two-year anniversary of the Drury-Briere departures. This current group has not been nearly as good since that day. Since that day, this organization has felt what they have left is good enough. And it is not. As for the draft, I cannot get excited about players I have not seen play a minute of hockey. I don’t know these guys from a hole in the wall. Maybe Kassian can be of help in a couple of years. I don’t care about a couple of years from now. The Sabres shouldn’t either.

Pop Stand: Anne Neville’s blog about Michael Jackson following his sudden death at age 50 brought an array of emotion and response, including this from JOEY Z:
I was fortunate enough to see this great performer at Rich Stadium. He could do it all. I will never forget the show. Fred Astaire said it best when he said of Michael, “What a marvelous performer and dancer.”
I’m so glad I got to see him. Rest in peace, King of Pop, you deserved the title. [Actress] Farrah [Fawcett] was so beautiful and charming. She fought the good fight and brought so much courage in her final days. Was so sad to see her at the end after all the visions of what a gorgeous woman she was, inside and out, and that’s what we should remember her by.
[Television personality] Ed McMahon, [former Buffalo Braves star] Randy Smith, these too. Death is part of our life, but losing these stars does not make it easy to accept . . .
Pam had a dimmer view of the pop star: I wouldn’t have gone across the street to see
him. Why does he get top billing? No great loss . . . he was only cute as the little
one of the Jackson 5 years ago. It was all downhill after that! Farrah Fawcett fought cancer with great bravery.
