Edith V. Buscaglia, a teacher in Buffalo public schools and a homemaker, died Monday in Beechwood Continuing Care, Getzville. She was 96.
Born in Corning, the former Edith Tiglio moved to Buffalo to attend college, and in 1935 graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from D’Youville College, where she majored in Greek and English.
In 1937, she married into the prominent Buscaglia family of Buffalo. Her husband, Anthony J. Buscaglia, was an officer in the family’s grocery chain, A&C Buscaglia Wholesale Grocery Co. He died in 1977. His brothers were Christy J., who served as Buffalo’s first Italian-American Surrogate Court judge, and Thomas A., a founder of the Tops food store chain.
A longtime Snyder resident, Mrs. Buscaglia was credited with instilling a drive for academic achievement in her children, who currently practice medicine, dentistry and speech pathology in the Buffalo area.
Mrs. Buscaglia was an elementary school teacher who taught for six years in the Buffalo schools.
She was considered an exceptional seamstress, designing and making coats and draperies, and a fine cook.
Mrs. Buscaglia was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and its Rosary&Altar Society.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Neill, Nancy Findlay and Christine M.; and two sons, Dr. Anthony and Dr. John.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a. m. Saturday in SS. Peter&Paul Catholic Church, 5480 Main St., Williamsville.
