George H. Gesegnet Sr., served in Merchant Marine in WWII

George H. Gesegnet Sr. of Orchard Park died Nov. 1 in the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Cheektowaga. He was 87.
Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Amherst High School and Wooster College in Ohio. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II and retired from International Multifoods in 1982. He then worked for Federal Bakers on William Street in Buffalo until he retired in 2004.
Mr. Gesegnet was a Shriner with the Ismailia Temple, a member of the Masons Harmony Lodge and a member and elder of the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. He also was a member of the Religious Society of Friends of Quakers in Orchard Park.
Mr. Gesegnet was a longtime member of the Foothills Trail Club, Adirondack Mountain Club, Grand Island Rod and Gun Club, Buffalo Launch Club and Buffalo Athletic Club. He planted trees in Zoar Valley on Arbor Day.
He is survived by a daughter, Martha; two sons, George Jr. and John; and a dear friend, Jeanne O’Neill.
A celebration of Mr. Gesegnet’s life will be held at 4 p. m. May 15 in the Quaker Meeting Place, East Quaker Road, Orchard Park. A memorial food drive will be held in his honor Sunday at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 4369 S Buffalo St., Orchard Park.
